Obituary for Joseph E. O'Connor

JOSEPH E. O’CONNOR, age 70, retired Philadelphia Police Chief Inspector and US Army veteran, passed away peacefully on January 26, 2017. Devoted husband of Akiko “Kimi” O’Connor. Loving father of Marie O’Connor Meyers and her husband, Jim. Beloved Pop-Pop of Isabella and Sophia. Chief O'Connor was widely regarded as a hard-working, wise and astute police commander. He was the 2006 recipient of the Harry Neal Award, presented by the US Secret Service. In addition to his police career, Chief O'Connor was the World Series of Poker Champion in the Philadelphia region, making it to the final rounds of the WSOP tournament in Las Vegas that year. Chief O'Connor's activities also included an interest in weight-lifting, where his awards in completion included the 1971 Texas State Weight Lifting Champion, Mr. Philadelphia's Finest in 1984, 2nd place in the Mid-Atlantic Super Heavyweight Lifting contest, and 1st Place in Boodley's Gym competition in 1984. Relatives, friends and members of F.O.P. Lodge #5, AOH, VFW Post 15040 and Knights of Columbus Council #4921 are invited to attend his viewing Thursday, 9:30am until 11:00am at St. Christopher Church, 13301 Proctor Rd., Phila., followed by funeral mass 11:00am. Burial private. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to woundedwarriorproject.org.
